More funding could be in store for Morgan Local

Morgan County Herald- Morgan Local Schools Supt. Lori Snyder-Lowe was excited over the proposed changes in the proposed education reform plan announced last Thursday in Columbus.

"I think it is a great improvement over the initial plan that was released. I really feel that the House subcommittee and the governor listened to the needs of the high poverty districts and made changes that will help our district," she stated.

She went on to say, "I hope that there will be flexibility built in the plan for implementing the reform plan initiative and the funding plan," Supt. Lowe said.

Morgan Local was expecting to receive a 0 percent increase in 2010 and a -2 percent decrease in 2011. Mrs. Lowe spoke to a recent meeting of the Morgan County Chamber of Commerce and said the school district’s treasurer has predicted an $800,000 deficit by June 30 of this year.

State Representative Debbie Phillips (D-Athens), who represents Morgan County in the Legislature, said, "Funding for schools should be based on what children need, and for the first time in Ohio, we have a proposal that does just that. We have the opportunity to make sure our kids get the education they need to be good citizens, prepared for the global economy."

Rep. Phillips went on to say, "Hundreds of people testified in front of the Primary and Secondary Education Subcommittee of the House Finance Committee, in a very open process, to help strengthen this plan. We heard the concerns of Ohioans about the areas that needed improvement, and we worked to make those needed changes. Building on the bold vision outlined by Governor Strickland, we now have a stronger proposal – one that will create a constitutional, effective system for funding education in Ohio."
