State Rep. Debbie Phillips, D-Athens, said Wednesday the state operating budget approved Monday evening comes the closest yet to funding public schools in a sufficient manner.
"This is a great example of citizens making a difference. Individuals with disabilities approached Senator Stewart and myself, and were able to change public policy through their advocacy," Rep. Phillips said
Pomeroy - State Rep. Debbie Phillips, D-Athens, said the list of priority projects for the state’s share of ARRA funding for water and water pollution control projects includes the following:
Higher energy costs have people talking about conservation and energy independence. It’s a moment we should seize, particularly in Ohio, with its high energy consumption. According to the US Department of Energy, Ohio is the 6th highest user of energy, and the 4th highest user of electricity among the states. Ohio is also significant in energy production, with its coal and nuclear plants.
High energy prices stretch individuals, families, and businesses that are already struggling to make ends meet. Our use of energy calls us to be leaders in the development of better energy technologies, with a strong emphasis on conservation and renewables.
Serious investment in clean energy is the first step towards getting away from dangerous, polluting energy sources. The benefits go beyond the obvious ecological advantages. A recent study by Policy Matters Ohio found that investing in renewable energy could create 22,000 new jobs. It’s smart for consumers, it’s smart for the environment, and it’s smart for the economy. Ohio can be a leader in producing clean energy, and we can emerge stronger economically.
Debbie Phillips supports Governor Ted Strickland’s plan for clean energy in Ohio. The highlights of the plan are to invest in clean energy, encourage the development of alternative energy, spur hybrid manufacturing, support clean coal technologies, increase ethanol production, encourage use of biofuels, use state purchasing to lead by example, conduct an energy audit of state buildings and reduce energy use, and launch a higher education energy challenge. Govenor Strickland acheieved many of these goals this past year when he signed Senate Bill 221, which sets the goal of 25% of Ohio’s energy coming from advanced energy by 2025. Debbie Phillips wants to be able to work with Governor Strickland to continue this important work of not only making Ohio a better place to live but encouraging economic development in the energy sector
In southeastern Ohio, we have several companies that are leaders in the field of renewable/clean energy. These companies have opportunities to grow, and help to wean us from our over-reliance on polluting energy sources. Clean coal plants in our region will help the region economically while reducing emissions. Coal is likely to continue to play a significant role in US energy production. Clean coal technology has a place in a strategic transition to clean energy.
For far too long, policymakers have basically ignored renewables and conservation in the discussion about energy policy. Debbie Phillips believes that the progress that Governor Strickland has made can and should be continued.
Debbie Phillips will speak clearly for conservation and clean energy policies, which will clean up our air and our streams, and grow our local economy at the same time.
